Consultancy for SMB's
The worldwide market for management consultancy is currently worth over $100 billion having grown from less than $10 billion over the last decade. Approximately one tenth of that work is generated by UK based consultancy firms. The UK and Germany are by far the largest markets in Europe, each representing 27 per cent of the total. In third place, France represents 16 per cent of the total European market of 47.5 billion Euros.
Outsourcing and IT related consulting accounts for half of all fee income services in the UK. With continuing consolidation among the largest players, we are seeing the emergence of a number of niche consultancy firms working in specific sectors or offering a particular type of consultancy. These small businesses are able to offer more competitive rates and deep vertical expertise. The big firms are also facing increasing competition from offshore IT service providers who have access to a highly skilled but low cost work force.
Practices can vary broadly and are usually divided into the following structures:
Generalist - Offers a wide range of services from strategy consulting and human resources to IT and in some cases
outsourcing on a global basis.
Strategy Consulting - These are smaller than the generalists firms in the UK, and they primarily offer strategic advice to
companies on a project by project basis.
Human Resource Consulting - These firms offer specialist advice ranging from reviews of salaries and benefits to
development of leadership skills.
Niche firms - Much of the growth in UK consulting has been as a result of consultants leaving the larger firms and setting
up their own consultancy firms in a particular sector or offering a specialist service.
As clients look for integrated solutions, many consultancy firms are entering into alliances with software suppliers, telecom companies, and other services providers in order to provide a broader range of services and to extend their national and international reach.
